France sharply criticised the pace of Nato's air campaign against Colonel Muammer Gaddafi's forces on the 12 April 2011, warning the alliance was not doing enough to destroy the Libyan leader's heavy weapons on the ground. In a sign of renewed tensions within Nato over a campaign that appears to have slipped into a stalemate, Alain Juppe, France's Foreign Minister, said the alliance's effort to contain Col Gaddafi was falling short of what was needed. William Hague, Britain's Foreign Secretary, also appeared to indicate frustration with the coalition operation that is now into its fourth week. 'We must maintain and intensify our efforts in Nato,' he said on Tuesday. Foreign ministers of the international 'Contact Group' met in Qatar on the 13 April 2011 for talks on Libya, with France and Britain calling for intensified NATO air strikes against forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi as the rebels struggled to weaken his grip on power. However, Germany once again said that there could no military solution to the ongoing crisis in Libya. As the contact group met on Libya opened in Doha, Berlin said it was ready to support a humanitarian mission. |
