The conditions were not yet in place for France to deliver a controversial warship to Russia, the French finance minister Michel Sapin said on the 30 October 2014. The statement came after Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin had said on the 29 October 2014 said the handover would take place in November 2014. A final decision by French President, Francois Hollande, on the delivery of the €1.2bn warships was scheduled to be taken in November, if Russia stuck to the peace plan with Ukraine and fully observed the ceasefire agreement'. Commentators generally thought the delivery would take place in November. However, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls ruled out the imminent delivery of two French-built warships to Russia, insisting that conditions set by France over Moscow’s role in the Ukraine crisis had not yet been met. The new Russian international news agency Sputnik (previously RIA Novosti) reported on the 14 November 2014 that Russia would give France deadline until the end of November 2014 to deliver the first Mistral-class helicopter carrier. It would make serious legal claims if France did not fulfill its contract. France24 reported on the 25 November 2014 that President François Hollande had delayed indefinitely his decision on whether to deliver the first of the two Mistral helicopter carriers ordered by Russia citing the 'current situation' in eastern Ukraine. Russia later said it did not plan to sue France by way of response. |
