Article reports that France and Britain were working on the 16 March 2011 to persuade other members of the UN Security Council to back a resolution aimed at stopping Muammer Gaddafi’s jets from bombing civilians. With Russia and Germany still expressing doubts, Alain Juppé, French Foreign Minister, said that several Arab countries had pledged to participate in possible military action in the north African country. France and the United Kingdom finally succeeded in getting a UN Security Council resolution adopted on the 17 March 2011 authorising ‘Member States [...] to take all necessary measures [...] to protect civilians and populated civilian areas under threat of attack’ from the Libyan regime. |
