The United Kingdom government announced on the 6 October 2016 in a landmark ruling for the UK shale gas industry that horizontal fracking could go ahead at Cuadrilla's Preston New Road site at Little Plumpton in Lancashire. The Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government allowed Cuadrilla's appeal against Lancashire County Council's decision in 2015 to refuse permission for fracking at the Preston New Road site, subject to conditions. It would mean, for the first time, that UK shale rock would be fracked horizontally, which was expected to yield more gas. Environmentalists and local campaign groups reacted angrily, saying it was a denial of local democracy. In the same decision, the UK Minister allowed the opportunity for more information to be provided on highway safety issues related to a second site (Roseacre) and indicated that, subject to those concerns being addressed, he was minded to allow the appeal, subject to conditions. Lancashire County Council said that 'It is clear that the government supports the development of a shale gas industry, but we would ask them to do more to address the concerns of local communities and the councillors who represent them by supporting the best environmental controls'. Friends of the Earth said 'Not only is this decision undemocratic, it could open the floodgates for more fracking across the country if the government is willing to overturn decisions made by local councils'. |
