Greek police used teargas to disperse stone-throwing protesters outside the country’s parliament on the 9 December 2008, in a fourth day of unrest after a boy, Alexis Grigoropoulos, was killed by security forces. The government has pledged a swift investigation into the shooting. Mr Karamanlis, whose centre-right party has an overall majority of one seat in parliament, is facing opposition pressure for an early election. Violence erupted in Athens, Thessaloniki and several other Greek cities. The shooting of the youth has further stoked anger over corruption scandals, a widening gap between rich and poor and economic problems exacerbated by the global financial crisis, sparking the worst riots in decades. Greece was braced for further turmoil on the 10 December 2008 as unions stage a general strike in protest against the government's economic policies. |
