Belgium was on high alert after a series of anti-terror raids on the 15 January 2015 in which two suspected Islamist militants were killed and a third arrested. The suspects were shot dead in the eastern town of Verviers after they opened fire on police with automatic weapons. All three All three people involved had recently returned from Syria. 300 Belgian military were deployed across several cities on the 17 January 2015 to reinforce the country's police, including the Belgian capital of Brussels and the northern port city of Antwerp, which had a large Jewish population. Like Belgium, several other European nations also stepped up security in light of the attacks on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Paris Jewish supermarket earlier in January 2015. On 17 January 2015, Belgian prosecutors asked ofr the extradition of one of two terror suspects arrested in Greece on the same day over a possible link with the alleged Islamist plot against Belgian police. |
