The fighting in east Ukraine dropped in intensity on 15 February 2015 but still existed around the contested town of Debaltseve, on the first day of a ceasefire agreed on 12 February 2015 (Minsk II Agreement) by Ukraine, Russia, France and Germany. According to media sources, there was widespread scepticism on all sides that the ceasefire could hold, not least because it was similar to a deal signed in September 2014 that broke down almost immediately. According to a joint statement made by representatives of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s republics, should Kiev continue striving to become a NATO member state, the republics would consider the Minsk agreement null and void. Despite the agreement being reached, the European Union decided to extended the sanctions against Russia, as you can check by clicking here. Pro-Russian separatists said on the 17 February 2015 that say they now controlled at least 80% of Debaltseve in eastern Ukraine. Fierce fighting had continued in the strategic city, despite a ceasefire deal signed on the 12 February 2015. The United Nations Security Council adopted on the 17 February 2015 a resolution endorsing the 13-point accord on ending the Ukraine crisis agreed in Minsk – including a cease-fire – and called on all parties to the conflict to fully implement that cessation of hostilities, as the UN human rights office expressed concern over reported shelling and trapped civilians in the country’s east. While the resolution was adopted unanimously, the US accused Russia of violating the Minsk agreement on Ukraine, and said that that Russia had to prove its commitment to peace. |
