The United Kingdom Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Michael Gove set out his vision on the future of the UK farming industry at the Oxford Farming Conference 2018 on the 4 January 2018. Mr Gove told farmers that the UK government would guarantee subsidies at the current EU level until the 2022 election. There would then be a 'transitional period' in England (governments in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales would decide policies in those areas). He also said that the current subsidy regime, which rewarded land ownership, would be replaced by a scheme more focused on supporting the environment. The National Farmers Union (NFU) said it welcomed a commitment to a national food policy and recognition from the Secretary of State that food production was ‘at the heart of all farming businesses’. Mr Gove gave a further speech on these themes called A Brighter Future for Farming at the NFU Farming Conference 2018 in Birmingham on the 20 February 2018 (see related hyperlinks below). |
