Denmark triumphed at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, held in the Swedish city of Malmö. Emmelie de Forest, 20, had been the overwhelming favourite among the 26 entries, with her song Only Teardrops, winning with 281 points, 47 points ahead of the second position, held by Azerbaijan. Germans lamented their unexpectedly poor showing at the Eurovision Song Contest, blaming Chancellor Angela Merkel's tough stance in the eurozone crisis for their failure to win any points from 34 of the 39 countries voting. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev ordered an inquiry into why his country gave Russia "nul points" at Saturday's show while mobile phone operators reported that Russia's Dina Garipova came second in the local vote. The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, called it an "outrageous incident." This annual competition is watched by some 125 million viewers worldwide. Nevertheless, by November 2013 it was clear that Bulgaria was joining Serbia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Cyprus and Slovakia in not taking part in the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest. |
