A German candidate for the presidency of the European Central Bank would be more popular across Europe than any other nationality, a Financial Times survey has revealed, January 2011.

The surprise results of an FT/Harris opinion poll suggest that Axel Weber, the German Bundesbank President, could enjoy broader backing as a successor to Jean-Claude Trichet than potential rivals from the other 16 eurozone countries.
