In November 2010, the European Commission opened an investigation into Google’s activities in the EU market for internet search, after complaints by rivals that its dominant position was in breach of fair competition and antitrust regulations.

EurActive reported on the 31 July 2014 that after a four-year investigation into the company's web search practices, the European Commission stepped up inquiries recently, sending companies questionnaires that sought more details than previous queries on the matter in 2011 and 2013.

Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia said that ‘very negative’ responses from complainants over a proposed settlementwith Google and new data raised over the summer of 2014 by complainants required further examination.
