On 22-25 May 2014, all 28 EU member states will hold elections for the European Parliament. Across Europe, parties are gearing up to go head-to-head on unemployment, euroscepticism and the future of the union. EurActiv is following the latest news on the issue. Although the European Parliament wanted the next European Commission president to be chosen according to the results of the next election, an unclear outcome might lead to a compromise candidate. Jyrki Katainen, Pierre Moscovici, Christine Lagarde and Helle Thorning-Schmidt were among the rumoured names. The heads of the European Commission and the European Council, José Manuel Barroso and Herman Van Rompuy, clashed on the 22 April 2014 over the procedure to appoint the next Commission President following the EU elections. Also Martin Schulz and Jean-Claude Juncker, two of the candidates for the presidency of the European Commission, reacted negatively to Mr. Rompuy's statements. On the 18 May 2014, Herman Van Rompuy, the European Council President, reiterated his personal reservations about the pan-European 'Spitzenkandidaten' for the EU elections, stressing the next EU Commission president “needs a large majority in the Council too”. |
