Report of an FT interview with Mario Monti, the former European Commissioner for the Internal Market, 1994-1999, and Competition, 1999-2004 commissioner. Mr Monti was appointed in October 2009 by José Manuel Barroso, European Commission President, to recommend ways of giving new impetus to the single market.

In the interview he suggests that the European Union may have to moderate tax competition between member states if it is to revive the drive towards market integration.
