Europe defended biofuels against charges that their production is a 'crime against humanity' that threatens global food supplies. Yet pressure continues to mount for the European Union to back off on its biofuel targets. Biofuel policies and subsidies should be urgently reviewed in order to preserve the goal of world food security, protect poor farmers, promote broad-based rural development and ensure environmental sustainability, FAO reported in October 2008 in a new edition of its annual publication The State of Food and Agriculture (SOFA) 2008. |
