The United States and European Union have begun formal negotiations in the spring of 2011 on an agreement to protect personal information they exchange to fight crime and terrorism.

Representatives of EU Member States and the United States discussed the combat against cybercrime and the amendment of related cooperation, at a ministerial meeting on 13 April 2011 in Budapest.
