Preview and reports of the issues discussed at the EU-US Summit, Brussels, 26 March 2014. EU and US leaders met on Wednesday 26 March 2014 in Brussels for their regular summit. The European Union was represented by the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy, and the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso assisted by High Representative Catherine Ashton and Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht. They welcomed US President Barack Obama assisted by US Trade Representative Michael Froman. The Summit took stock of joint achievements, set priorities and charted the way ahead for a stronger transatlantic relationship. Issues on the agenda included major global challenges: to secure a sustainable economic recovery; to lead the fight against climate change and ensure energy security; to meet the challenges of the new digital society; to tackle security and development; and also to address a range of foreign policy issues, notably Ukraine but also Iran, the Middle East Peace Process, Syria and other crisis situations. The Summit also took stock of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations as a unique opportunity to create jobs and promote growth in Europe, the US and the world. |
