Background

In autumn 2013 then Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich refused to sign the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement document, triggering the Maidan protests, which eventually led to the autocratic leader's resignation.

Subsequently, on 11 July 2017, the Council of the European Union adopted a decision to conclude the Association Agreement with Ukraine on behalf of the European Union. This took place on the eve of the EU-Ukraine summit, Kyiv, 12-13 July 2017.

This was the final step of the ratification process through which the EU and Ukraine committed to a close, long-term relationship in all main policy areas. It would allow the full implementation of the agreement as of 1 September 2017.On 1 September 2017 the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement fully entered into force.
