EU competition officials – who oversee adherence to the bloc’s state aid regime – have made clear September 2009 that they intend to review the deal for General Motor's Opel operations very carefully, to make sure that state aid and internal market rules are upheld.

Kris Peeters, premier of Belgium’s Flanders region, which houses Opel’s Antwerp plant, said on the 16 September 2009 that European Union regulators had promised a 'very severe' examination of Germany’s plan to provide loan guarantees for the restructuring of General Motors’ Opel unit.
