On her first visit to the city since being appointed as the Education Secretary for Wales, Kirsty Williams said on the 14 July 2016 students and staff from across the European Union were welcome at Swansea University, and elsewhere in Wales, despite the result of the UK following the EU referendum in June 2016 to leave the EU.
