In the context of the migration crisis facing European countries in the summer of 2015, the Slovak Republic made it clear in August 2015 that it would only accept Christian refugees and would reject Muslim asylum seekers. The country was due to receive 200 people under the EU plan to resettle 40,000 new arrivals in Italy and Greece. The European Commission and the Council of Europe condemned the move. 'Refusing refugees on the grounds of their religion would be a blatant discrimination,' Council of Europe Secretary-General Thorbjørn Jagland said in a statement on the 20 August 2015. 'Especially during this unprecedented refugee crisis, there must be no place for xenophobia and discrimination. Europe must show solidarity with these vulnerable people'. Norbert Röttgen, chairman of the German Bundestag's foreign affairs committee said that Slovakia's behavior was contributing to the failure of Europe, and that the country's egotism would torpedo the EU's ability to act. Jean Asselborn, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Luxembourg, the current EU Presidency country, criticised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on the 3 September 2015 for saying refugees should not come to Europe, and that Muslims were not welcome in Hungary. |
