The EU's Commission for Energy Union Maroš Šefčovič pointed out on 26 January 2016 the intention to acquire powers to review energy delas between member states and other countries before they were signed.

The idea would most likely be part of the energy security package to be presented in February 2016, within the framework of the Energy Union. However, it was also known to be against the position of some member states, reluctant to cede control to Brussels.
