Following the EU referendum in the United Kingdom on the 23 June 2016 by which a majority voted for the UK to leave the EU there were serious political repercussions for the Labour Party. A number of Shadow Ministers resigned from the Shadow Cabinet under leader Jeremy Corbyn on the 26 and 27 June 2016 and called on him to resign. Most criticised his EU referendum campaign input (up to 17:00 on the 27 June 2017 23 out of 31 shadow cabinet members had resigned or been sacked (Hilary Benn)). Labour MPs were due to discuss a no confidence motion against Mr Corbyn later on the 27 June 2016. Angela Eagle, MP, formally launched a bid on the 11 July 2017 to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader, describing herself as 'a strong Labour woman' who could heal divisions in the party and lead it to election victory. A further challenger, Owen Smith, MP, launched a leadership bid on the 13 July 2016. Labour announced its election timetable on the 14 July 2016. The winner was expected to be announced on the eve of the party conference in late September 2016. On the 19 July 2016 Angela Eagle dropped out of the contest leaving a clean clash between Own Smith and Jeremy Corbyn. |
