The European Union called off on the 18 October 2011 a high-level meeting with Viktor Yanukovich, the Ukrainian President, in apparent protest at the jailing of his political rival, opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, the previous week.

The EU said it would postpone the 20 October 2011 scheduled meeting in Brussels 'until a later date when the conditions are more conducive to making progress on bilateral relations'.

On the otherhand Russian President Dmitri Medvedev said the decision to jail former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko was 'Ukraine's internal affair'.
