Articles leading up to the emergency meeting of Eurozone leaders in Brussels, 21 July 2011 to try and find a way of agreeing on a formula for second bail-out for Greece and to deal with the eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Report of an interview Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou gave to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini published on the 17 July 2011 just ahead of the summit of Eurogroup leaders pencilled in for the 21 July 2011 aimed at agreeing a second bail-out package for Greece and averting further contagion problems for Italy and Spain. He appealed to the country’s European partners to 'wake up' and take the 'bold' decisions needed to end the eurozone’s escalating debt crisis. Separately, Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, warned that she would only attend the emergency summit on the eurozone financial crisis in Brussels if there was going to be an agreement on a new rescue plan for Greece. In an interview published on the 18 July 2011 in the Financial Times Deutschland, European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said that he would not accept defaulted Greek bonds as collateral and that governments would have to step in and take measures if Greek government debt were given a default rating. Eurozone leaders must solve the Greek debt crisis or else the 'negative consequences' would be felt across Europe and beyond, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso warned on the 20 July 2011. The Financial Times, EurActiv and other news sources reported on the morning of the 21 July 2011 that France and Germany had reached a common position on a second bailout of Greece in their effort to prevent the country's debt crisis from spreading through Europe, after a late night meeting between President Sarkozy and Chancellor Merkel in Berlin on the evening of the 20 July 2011 |
