EU migration meeting turns into fracas

Report of discussion at the European Council, Brussels, 25 June 2015 on the migration crisis facing EU Member States. The discussion became heated at times.

Leaders agreed that 40,000 migrants would be relocated from Greece and Italy to other states over the following two years. Interior ministers would finalise the scheme by the end of July 2015. And another 20,000 would be resettled. However, this would not be by a system of mandatory or fixed quotas.

Leaders also agreed to accelerate readmission negotiations with the third countries and to fully implement EU rules on returns.
