Leaders of all 27 European Union governments vowed on the 6 October 2008 to 'take whatever measures necessary' to prop up the financial system as markets plunged across the continent and countries raced to put in place blanket protection for depositors. The unscheduled statement was rushed out after a clutch of other countries followed Germany, and previously the US, Greece and Ireland in offering full or improved guarantees for retail savings. |
