Several senior officials were sent by the European Union to Turkey to salvage the migration agreement and restore strained diplomatic relations. Both the European Parliament's president and European Commissioner for Migration were scheduled to meet their Turkish counterparts, including president Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos and Turkey's minister for EU affairs Omer Celik issued statements on 1 September in a joint press conference. Mr Avramopoulos emphasized the benefits of the key partnership and condemned on behalf of the European Union the recent military coup attempt and terrorist attacks. Following a meeting in Bratislava with EU officials, Mr Celik reasssured that it would continue to implement the migration agreement to stem the flow of migrants to Europe, but said it would not make further moves unless it is granted visa-free EU travel. |
