EUObserver and other news sources reported in November 2013 that EU diplomats had given up hope Ukraine would sign an association and free trade treaty at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius later in the month. As EurActiv reported on the 13 November 2013, the Ukrainian Parliament had yet to pass a bill on the release of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko for treatment abroad. On the 19 November 2013, EUObserver wroted that the fate of EU-Ukraine relations, and the EU's broader efforts to reform post-Soviet countries on its eastern borders, was likely to be decided at the "last minute" before a summit at the end of November 2013. On 18-20 November 2013, Commissioner Füle met with President Yanukovych to discuss preparations of the Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius, including the signature of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement. BBC News and other news agencies reported on the 21 November 2013 that Ukrainian MPs had rejected a bill that would have allowed the release of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, dealing a blow to Kiev's hopes of a trade deal with the EU. |
