In view of the 4 November general elections in Nicaragua, the European Union decided, on the 24 October 2001 to deploy an Election Observation Mission (EOM) in Nicaragua. The decision followed an invitation from the Nicaraguan Government issued last April and an exploratory mission which visited the country in June. The EU EOM was headed by Jannis Sakellariou, Member of the European Parliament, who opened the mission in Managua on 25 September. Mr Sakellariou was assisted by Rafael Lopez Pintor, Deputy Chief Observer and four other experts. The EU EOM has already deployed 8 Long Term Observers in the regions of Managua, Léon, Granada, Mantagalpa, Ocotal, Bluefields and Puero Cabeza. On election day, the EU EOM planned to deploy about 100 observers to follow the voting, counting and tabulation procedures. |
