Resistance (from countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy) in the EU to an embargo on Iranian oil was said to have dropped in January 2012, paving the way for a ban on oil imports from Iran to come into effect as early as the end of January 2012.

However, Mario Monti, Italy’s Prime Minister, warned on the 5 January 2012 that his government would only back a ban on European Union oil imports from Iran if the embargo was imposed gradually and excluded billions of euros of oil-related debt owed to Rome-based oil group Eni.
