The second summit between the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) was scheduled to take place on 10 and 11 June 2015 in Brussels. It aimed at bringing together European, Latin American and Caribbean leaders to strengthen relations between both regions. These summits were the main fora for dialogue and cooperation between Europe, and Latin American and Caribbean states. Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, chaired the summit which 61 heads of state or governments attended. The theme of the summit was 'Shaping our Common Future: working together for prosperous, cohesive & sustainable development'. Debates during the summit focused focus on bi-regional and global issues. It was an occasion to underline the importance of EU-CELAC cooperation in a complex, rapidly changing world. The summit also promoted the shared identity and values of Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. It was also be an opportunity to deepen political dialogue on citizen-oriented initiatives in terms of innovation for sustainable growth, education, security, and climate change. The previous summit took place in January 2013, in Chile. It focused on trade collaboration and the promotion of investments of social and environmental quality. |
