The Council of the European Union formally adopted on 12 September 2016 its position regarding the draft EU budget for 2017. The Council's main objective was to ensure that the limited financial resources available were directed towards what it conidered to be the priorities for the year ahead, such as migration crisis, actions to boost Europe's economy and creation of jobs.

The draft budget was proposed in June by the European Commission and the Council's position had already been agreed by the Permanent Representatives Committee in July.
