On 3 May 2011 the European Commission unveilled 'The 2020 biodiversity strategy: our life insurance, our natural capital: an EU biodiversity strategy to 2020'. This was a new strategy to protect and improve the state of Europe's biodiversity over the following decade. The strategy included six targets which addressed the main drivers of biodiversity loss, and which aimed at reducing the main pressures on nature and ecosystem services in the EU by anchoring biodiversity objectives in key sectoral policies. The global aspects of biodiversity loss were also addressed, ensuring that the EU contributes to combating biodiversity loss around the world. The strategy was in line with the commitments made by the EU in Nagoya, Japan, in 2010. |
