Preview, reports and analysis of a meeting between Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Russia's President Vladimir Putin in St Petersburg on the 9 August 2016. The meeting was seen as a visible and substantive sign of a rapprochement in relations between the two countries following the sanctions imposed by Russia in 2015 after the downing of a Russian fighter plane by Turkey in November 2015. President Erdoğan and President Putin held a joint press conference following their meeting. President Erdoğan said: 'Both sides are immensely determined and have the will to move the relations back to their former level and even beyond. During our meeting today, we have taken decisions that will move Turkey-Russia relations back to their rightful level in political, financial, cultural and humanitarian spheres'. President Putin said 'The history of our relations includes different periods, sometimes very uneasy and even dramatic ones, but the logic of mutual respect inevitably wins out ... Our priority is to reach the pre-crisis level of bilateral cooperation. The warming of relations between the two countries was also seen by commentators in the context of the increasingly strained relations between Turkey and its allies in NATO, the United States and European countries. |
