Turkey's government submitted a draft law to parliament in a bid to strengthen the position of the country's intelligence service.

If Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had his way, Turkey's intelligence service MIT would become much more powerful and much more detached from the country's judiciary, critics said. They feared this would circumvent separation of powers and said this would turn Turkey into a surveillance state.
