The European Parliament Conference of Presidents, uniting the EP president and political group leaders, unanimously backed on 14 April 2016 the setting up of an inquiry committee to investigate the so-called Panama Papers, which revealed detailed information on off-shore companies and their ultimate beneficiaries. The parliament's plenary session was scheduled to vote on the creation of this committe in May, but this was postponed after some legal questions over its functioning were raised. The European Parliament Conference of Presidents agreed on the 2 June 2016 on a mandate for the inquiry committee to look into the Panama Papers. The proposal by the Conference of Presidents would be voted by Parliament as a whole on the 8 June 2016 during the plenary session in Strasbourg. The Committee would consist of 65 Members who would be tasked to investigate alleged contraventions and maladministration in the application of European Union law with respect to money laundering, tax avoidance and tax evasion by the European Commission or Member States. After the vote on the 8 June 2016, the Committee would have twelve months to draw up a report. |
