Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk defended in an article published by Financial Times on the 21 April 2014 that the European Union should create an energy union to secure its gas supply, as its dependency on Russian energy weakens its position. Studies on the impact of shale gas extraction in Europe’s economy and energy security mushroomed in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. A report from the UK Onshore Operators Group (UKOOG) claimed that the development of shale gas in the UK could generate "€40.2 billion” and “create up to 64,000 jobs” in Britain. EU Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger said on the 2 May 2014 that the EU wanted a uniform price for Russian gas for all its member states, adding Europe's common gas infrastructure should include Ukraine, Georgia and the western Balkans. More than two thirds of European business leaders who responded to a survey conducted by EurActiv and the European Business Summit, agreed efforts to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian gas should be intensified even if it meant raising energy prices. EU officials said in a draft report to be presented in June 2014 that Russia's strategy of buying up oil refineries in Europe could compromise the bloc's energy security. Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen accused Russia in June 2014 of funding NGOs which oppose shale gas. |
