The European Parliament's plenary session approved on 14 September 2016 an agreement granting duty-free access to the European Union for six countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) - Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland.

The deal was signed in June 2016 and it was set to enter into force once the Council of the European Union formally approved it and the national parliaments of the six African states ratified the text.
