The European Parliament debated and voted on its own-initiative six-month inquiry into US mass surveillance on the 11-12 March 2014. In the adopted Resolution it was argued that data protection should be kept out of the EU-US trade talks and negotiated separately, The EU should suspend its bank data deal with the US and the Safe Harbour privacy principles for US firms; the fight against terrorism could never justify secret and illegal mass surveillance. In advance of the debate EUObserver reported that former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden, whose initial disclosures in 2013 on US mass surveillance techniques had led to the inquiry, had made it clear in March 2014 that he desired asylum in Europe from his temporary base in Russia. |
