The two self-proclaimed 'People's Republics' run by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine held presidential and parliamentary elections on 2 November 2014. Separatist leaders won the elections. The elections were condemned by the international community, including the US and the EU, who said that agreements outlined by Ukraine and Russia in Minsk in October 2014, which stipulated that local elections were to be conducted under Ukrainian law in December 2014. The OSCE said that the holding of the elections ran counter to the letter and spirit of the Minsk Protocol and would further complicate its implementation. President Poroshenko of Ukraine claimed that 'farce at a gunpoint organised by the two terrorist organisations in parts of Donbas is a terrible event that has nothing in common with the real expression of the people’s will'. However, Russia said that it would recognise the results of the election. The politicians elected in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) and Luhansk People's Republic (LPR) have received mandate for a solution to resolve the crisis and to restore normal life in the regions, a Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on the 3 November 2014. |
