The special focus of the Council of the European Union's Think Tank Review, No.54, February 2018 provided access to the full text of recent articles and papers from major European think tanks on the 45th US President Donald Trump and the changes brought about in US policy one year after his inauguration. Various think tanks explored the impact on the EU of US withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), changes in US immigration policy, Trump's foreign policy and his decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and the future of America's evolving global engagement. The Review is compiled by the Library of the Council of the EU. Also in February 2017 the European Parliamentary Research Service published in their What Think Tanks are thinking series 'President Trump's record to date'. Donald Trump has made a number of highly controversial decisions during his first 13 months as US President – whether on foreign trade, climate change, migration, taxation or healthcare. His unorthodox communication style, often using emotional tweets, has frequently confused both domestic and international audiences. Although his 'America First' polices have not gone as far as some had feared, and he has presided over a period of continued economic growth, there remains very considerable anxiety about the path ahead. Earlier think tank publications on the Presidency of Donald Trump can be found in these separate Briefings: + 23.02.18: President Trump's record to date |
