These incidents raised much comment in German and other European news and commentary sources. The axe attacks in a regional train in Wurzburg, Germany on the 18 July 2016 that left several wounded had an Islamist background according to the investigations. The act carried out by a 17-year-old Afghan boy was apparently the result of a rapid and unnoticed radicalisation. Another attack on 24 July 2016 in Ansbach was perpetrated by a 27-year-old Syrian man who had been denied asylum in Germany. This wave of attacks was also complemented by another tragedy in Munich on 22 July 2016, as an 18-year-old German-Iranian man shot several people dead in a shopping mall. While not all these incidents were not related to Islamic radicalisation or the recent arrival of large numbers of refugees, they highlighted the integration challenges that Germany and other European countries faced. Some commentators in European newspapers called for improved integration of refugees. Others warned against blowing the actions of mentally disturbed individuals out of proportion. What would be the political implications for a Germany facing Federal elections in 2017, and regional elections earlier? |
