The European Union's High Representative for Foreign Policy met on 23 September 2016 with the United Nations' Special Advisor for Cyprus, to discuss the progress towards a comprehensive solution of the Cypriot issue. Federica Mogherini and Christos Stylianides, the EU’s Cypriot Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management visited Cyprus on the 28 October 2016 on an official visit. It was announced on the 26 October 2016 that the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Mustafa Akıncı, and the Greek Cypriot leader, Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, had decided to continue the Cyprus talks in Mont Pelerin, Switzerland from 7-11 November 2016. This intensive week of negotiations would be conducted under the auspices of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Cyprus, Mr. Espen Barth Eide. The meeting would concentrate on the chapter of territory as well as all other outstanding issues interdependently. The leaders expressed their hope that their meeting in Switzerland would pave the way for the last phase of the talks in line with their shared commitment to do their utmost in order to reach a settlement within 2016. On the 11 November 2016 it was announced there would be a short break and a reconvening in Switzerland on the 20 November 2016. |
