Denmark’s controversial policy of re-establishing permanent customs checks at its borders faced fresh scrutiny on the 14 July 2011 as European Commission officials inspected the checkpoints, with an eye to starting legal proceedings against Danish authorities if breaches in European Union law were identified. A team of experts would assess whether the measures, brought into operation earlier in July 2011, constitute a barrier to the free movement of goods and people, banned under the 1995 Schengen agreement, which abolished borders within much of the EU. |
