EurActiv reported on the 27 January 2014 that Denmark was preparing a push for stronger EU-wide 2030 climate and energy goals despite tough opposition from states such as the UK and Poland. The new climate and energy package had been announced the week before, followed by criticism from environmental groups and experts. On the 5 February 2014, the European Parliament sent a “strong message” in favour of an ambitious EU energy and climate policy for 2030, backing legally-binding goals for CO2 emissions, renewables and energy efficiency. On the 17 February 2014, an alliance representing more than a thousand European cities wrote to Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, calling for binding 2030 targets of 40% for energy efficiency, and 30% for renewable energy, in line with a European Parliament proposal. |
