The Council of the European Union adopted on 12 December 2016 travel restrictions and an asset freeze in respect of seven individuals occupying positions of authority in the chain of command over perpetrators of violence, with immediate effect.

The decision followed previous warnings from the EU that it would act should DR Congo's president not show signs of leaving office at the end of his mandate.

Congolese authorities immediately slammed the sanctions as both illegal and 'imperial'.
