On the 04 January 2010, the European Union condemned the recent murders of civil society and media representatives or their relatives in Honduras and expressed its solidarity with their families. The European Union recalled the obligation of the Honduran authorities to protect the human rights, including the freedom of expression, and the personal security of all persons in Honduras and called upon all political groups in Honduras to abstain from acts of violence. In this regard, the EU urged the Honduran authorities to do everything in their power to ensure the protection of human rights defenders, in accordance with the United Nations Declaration on the Right and Responsibility of Individuals, Groups and Organs of Society to Promote and Protect Universally Recognised Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. |
