Talks on the reunification of Cyprus were to resume in February 2014 following agreement between Turkish and Greek Cypriots on a negotiations roadmap. UN mediators said on the 8 February 2014 that the leaders of both sides would meet at a UN compound in the capital Nicosia on 11 February 2014. A roadmap for talks was agreed on the 7 February 2014 after several months of talks. Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and the leader of the breakaway Turkish Cypriots, Dervis Eroglu, said after an initial meeting on the 11 February 2014 that they would restart talks to create a two-zone federation reuniting the Mediterranean island country. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon welcomed on the 11 February 2014 the re-launching of negotiations aimed at reaching a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem and pledged the commitment of the United Nations to these efforts. |
