General Ante Gotovina, wanted for war crimes in Croatia, was captured on 8 December 2005 by Spanish police in the Canary Islands. The move will be a boost to Croatia's relations with the international community and will assist its European Union entry talks.

In April 2011 judges at the international court in The Hague sentenced former Croatian General Ante Gotovina to 24 years in prison, convicting him of crimes against humanity. Gotovina is regarded as a war hero in Croatia.
