Following that Hungary sealing off of its border with Serbia in September 2015 thousands of migrants travelling through Europe faced the challenge of finding a new route. From the 16 September 2015 migrants began to seek out the Hungarian border with Croatia. By the end of the 17 September 2015 Croatia had struggled to deal with at least 8,900 arrivals since the morning of the 16 September. Croatia's president asked the army to be ready to protect its borders from 'the illegal migration', state news agency Hina reported. Officials said migrants must apply for asylum in Croatia or be treated as illegal immigrants. Fergal Keane of the BBC commented 'A combination of angry young men, extraordinary numbers of people and a lack of any coherent plan by the EU has produced scenes of chaos in Europe'. European Commission President Juncker affirmed his personal support and offered EU technical and logistical assistance to Croatian Prime Minister Milanović to cope with the situation in Croatia. They agreed on the importance of treating all those seeking refuge from war, terror or oppression with human dignity and in line with Europe’s common values. They also underlined the need that all EU Member States respect EU law to the full. |
